IMPORTANT: This is a three credit class. Due to the condensed summer schedule the seminar meets for 2 hours and 50 minutes each week PLUS students meet with faculty in small groups for an extra half hour every week. The time/place of this extra meeting is determined by the professor.

REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.

Description

COURSE: The Practical Aspects of Lawyering. This course, taken in conjunction with a field placement, will explore the practical aspects of lawyering in a variety of practice areas. Topics to be discussed will include ethical issues (e.g. confidentiality, conflict of interest and duties to courts and other attorneys), diversity, professionalism and bias in the workplace. Relationships with clients, other attorneys and staff, both inside and outside the workplace, will be examined. Guest speakers will include individuals from a law firm discussing what is expected of a new associate practicing with a law firm; federal agency attorneys discussing ethical and other issues involved in government lawyering; and a not-for-profit attorney describing the realities of pro bono practice. This class is discussion-based and students will be expected to share their student workplace experiences as they relate to the topics raised in class.
