Description

The course surveys the First Amendment’s protection of freedom of speech and also introduces basic concepts of freedom of religion. The reading and discussion will focus primarily on freedom of speech and the many contexts in which it arises, very briefly on freedom of the press, and finally on the protection for religion that is provided by the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause. Class discussion will seek to foster critical thinking about the role and value of free expression in our society.
