American University Washington College of Law is pleased to announce the appointment of Heather Hughes as the new interim dean, effective July 1, after Dean Roger A. Fairfax Jr. departs. Professor Hughes brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship to her new role. Since joining the Washington College of Law in 2007, she has taught commercial, business, and property law, earning numerous accolades including the WCL Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2019, the Edwin A. Mooers Scholar Award in 2017, and the Emalee C. Godsey Scholar Award in 2010. Her current research focuses on the impact of emerging technologies on law and the legal profession, positioning her as a forward-thinking leader for the law school.

Prior to her tenure at American University, Professor Hughes practiced in the business department at Morrison & Foerster LLP and was a founding faculty member and assistant professor at FIU College of Law. Her extensive background in both academia and legal practice will be invaluable in her new role as Interim Dean.

"Dean Hughes has been a splendid partner in her service as senior associate dean for faculty and academic affairs, and I wish her all the best as she leads WCL in the coming year," Dean Fairfax said. "I also look forward to working with her within the law school dean community in the District of Columbia and nationally."

The university community welcomes her leadership and is excited about the future under her guidance.
