American University, including Washington College of Law, will move Commencement online. Members of the Class of 2020 will also be invited to a special dedicated ceremony in December 2020 that will feature all of the celebrations of Commencement.

AUWCL has successfully moved all of its more than 200 spring semester offerings – from 1L doctrinal courses to seminars to moot court trainings – online. Many have come up with creative ways to connect with students by holding virtual lunches, anonymous check-ins through Zoom polls, and even some pet introductions.

American University Washington College of Law’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA) was awarded 2020 Chapter of the Year by the Mid-Atlantic Black Law Student Association (“MABLSA”).

“My legal education was happening at a time when people were being killed for their ideas,” said Macarena Saez, faculty director of the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. “Human rights wasn’t just a theoretical thing but the standard for the violations we were living through.”
