On July 7, 2020, the DC Council voted to make the District of Columbia the first jurisdiction to restore voting rights to incarcerated residents with felony convictions. This significant democratic milestone comes after a testimony in support of the Bill by Visiting Professor Margaret Martin Barry, director of the Re-Entry Clinic at American University Washington College of Law.

Incoming 1L Tre’ Leonard is the embodiment of American University Washington College of Law’s motto, “Champion What Matters.” A finalist in Barbri’s One Lawyer Can Change the World Scholarship competition, Leonard wrote his essay submission on how negative experience with law enforcement during his youth have inspired him to attend law school, in order to affect change as a prosecutor.

Professor and Dean Emeritus Claudio Grossman has been awarded the 2020 Goler T. Butcher Medal by the American Society of International Law (ASIL). The Medal was presented by ASIL President Catherine Amirfar in recognition of Grossman's outstanding contributions to the development and effective realization of international human rights law.

Each summer, AUWCL hosts specialized summer law institutes covering a range of legal topics. This year, the Program on Law and Government designed a dynamic new online program to guide participants through this important election year: Campaign 2020 and the Law.

On Monday, June 29, faculty experts at American University Washington College of Law addressed the current impacts on immigration during "WCL Faculty Speaks: Migration Law and Policy During the COVID-19 Pandemic."
