President Joe Biden has named two American University Washington College of Law alumni to fill top environmental policy positions in his new administration. With nominations coming shortly before the January 20 inauguration, Biden named Elizabeth Klein ’06 Deputy Secretary of the Interior and Melanie Nakagawa ’05 Senior Director for Climate and Energy for the White House National Security Council (NSC).

As the global pandemic endures so must the work of students in the American University Washington College of Law Re-Entry Clinic. The Re-Entry Clinic provides the opportunity for law students, especially those enrolled in the part-time program, to help their clients gain parole and overcome barriers related to their re-integration into society.

Every four years, our country celebrates the beginning of a new presidential term. Regardless of whether we celebrate the second term of an incumbent president or the first term of a new aspirant to the presidency, the inauguration is an important symbol of continuity of governance and new beginnings.  Here in Washington, DC, the celebration takes on added significance, as the pomp and circumstance that typically accompanies the inauguration takes place in our own backyard

As the new semester begins and we look toward the year ahead, we asked AUWCL program directors and faculty experts to share their hopes and expectations for 2021, the new administration, and what changes we might see in their specialty areas.

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed nine Democrats to serve as impeachment managers, including Congressman and American University Washington College of Law Professor Emeritus Jamie Raskin, who represents Maryland’s 8th Congressional District, and Congresswoman and AUWCL alumna Stacey Plaskett ’94, who serves as the delegate from the Virgin Islands. Congressman Raskin was named the lead impeachment manager.
