American University Washington College of Law alumna Katherine Culliton-González ’93 was recently appointed by President Biden to serve as Officer for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at The Department for Homeland Security. 

American University Washington College of Law’s Human Rights Brief hosted a four-day symposium, Feb. 15-18, entitled “Police Brutality at Home & Abroad," featuring leading experts discussing issues of race, digital surveillance, immigration, and the role of religion in policing across the world.

Adding to the list of Washington College of Law alumni, faculty, and administrators joining the Biden Administration in various policy roles, Aruna Kalyanam ’07 and Andrew Strelka ’08 have joined the new administration in positions focusing on tax policy and compliance.

American University Washington College of Law, ranked 4th in the nation in international law, is known for its breadth of offerings in international and comparative law, and for being a welcoming environment for international students. However, like all universities, this past year presented new opportunities for American University faculty and staff to adapt recruiting efforts, deliver innovative course content, and engage students across the globe.

On February 4-5, American University Law Review (AULR) hosted its 2021 symposium “Privacy in the Age of Emergency,” welcoming scholars and practitioners from across the country to discuss the intersection of privacy law and surveillance, technology, and innovation amid COVID-19.
