1L Takes Case Challenging Maryland's Gerrymandering to the Supreme Court

Steve Shapiro’s decision to study law was bolstered from the experience of self-advocacy. In 2013, he and two co-plaintiffs filed a complaint fighting the new Congressional districts enacted in his home state of Maryland, arguing that the redistricting violated their Article 1 and First Amendment rights. On November 4, 2015 the Supreme Court of the United States heard Shapiro’s case, making the 1L a subject of national attention.

Two American University Washington College of Law students had the opportunity to attend the 70th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Oct. 19-21. Vanessa Alvarez and Maria Corina Muskus observed the work of Professor Mendez, United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, attended events at the United Nations, and met with the UN officials and delegates in New York.
