The Association of Corporate Counsel for the National Capital Region has named two members of the AUWCL class of 2018 to its Corporate Scholars Class of 2017. Michelle Emokpae and Joshua Morris were among the 12 area law students chosen as Scholars this year.

Professor Lindsay Wiley Elected President of American Society of Law, Medicine, and Ethics

American University Washington College of Law congratulates Professor Lindsay Wiley on her election as the next president of the American Society of Law, Medicine, and Ethics (ASLME).  On June 7, at the annual Health Law Professors’ Conference, Wiley, who is director of AUWCL’s Health Law and Policy Program, was nominated and elected as President by the ASLME Board of Directors. Her term will begin in October 2017.

Center for Human Rights Presents Annual Congressional Human Rights Summer Series

On Tuesday June 6, the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law, in cooperation with the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission (TLHRC), launched the 2017 Congressional Human Rights Summer Series on Capitol Hill. AUWCL faculty will present briefings on select human rights topics for Congressional staff and interns throughout the summer, examining how and why these topics are relevant to the work of the U.S. Congress.

Judge Peter J. Messitte Awarded Order of the Southern Cross by Brazilian President Temer

On June 2, Senior United States District Judge for the District of Maryland Peter J. Messitte was presented the Ordem do Cruzeiro do Sul (Order of the Southern Cross) by Brazilian President Michel Temer. The award was given to Judge Messitte “as a token of the gratitude and recognition for those who have rendered significant service to the Brazilian nation." The ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Brasilia.

Student Receives Latham and Watkins Diversity Scholarship

American University Washington College of Law congratulates Lucas Novaes ’18, one of 17 recipients of the expanded Latham & Watkins 2L Diversity Scholars Program. Novaes is currently a summer associate in the Latham & Watkins DC office, where he is working on a variety of matters, from complex commercial litigation to pro bono and private equity finance work.
