On Aug. 22, 2017, Professor and Dean Emeritus Claudio Grossman opened the Annual Course of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights in San Jose, Costa Rica. The President of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solis joined in the opening ceremony, which was attended by 200 participants in the course, including academics, journalists, diplomats, civil servants, and members of non-governmental organizations. American University Washington College of Law congratulates Lieutenant Commander Travis Noyes ’13 who recently received the American Bar Association Young Lawyer Division’s Outstanding Young Military Service Lawyer Award.

Professor Elliott Milstein, co-director of the AUWCL Civil Advocacy Clinic, received the 2017 Clinical Legal Education Association (CLEA) Award for Outstanding Advocate for Clinical Teachers at the AALS Conference on Clinical Legal Education in May.

Every year before classes begin, law students, faculty, and staff get together to participate in community service projects around the Washington, D.C. area. Since 2003, In My Back Yard (IMBY) has been organized by the school’s rising 2L Public Interest/Public Service Scholars and the Office of Public Interest.

On Aug. 14, 2017, as part of Orientation Week, the Program on Law and Government and the AUWCL Chapters of the American Constitution Society, the Federalist Society, and the National Lawyers Guild organized a panel presentation for incoming 1Ls featuring alumni currently working in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The program was followed by an afternoon tour of the U.S. Capitol.
