This past spring, AUWCL students Aythnis Rivera LL.M. '17 and Tatiana Devia '18 submitted an amicus brief that was recently cited by the Guatemalan Constitutional Court in support of its decision to eliminate the death penalty. This was the first time that the Constitutional Court referred to a specific amicus brief in its decision.      

American University Washington College of Law congratulates Practitioner-in-Residence Adrian Alvarez ‘10, who is being honored with this year’s Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia Rising Star Award. The award “recognizes an active member of the legal profession with ten years or less experience, principled service in the legal profession, and outstanding contributions to the legal profession.” 

Join the Trade, Investment, and Development Program for its second Wenger Annual Distinguished Lecture on Trade on November 8, 2017. This year’s lecture will feature Ambassador Alan Wolff, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Ambassador Wolff will discuss the current standing and future prospects of the world trading system. 

From October 26-28, leading health law, policy, and economics experts gathered from across the country at American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) for “Next Steps in Health Reform 2017” to discuss the dynamic health care landscape. Topics included health care delivery and payment reform, private insurance regulation and coverage for individuals with pre-existing conditions, the future of Medicaid and CHIP, and responses by states and communities to the changing federal role in health care.

From Oct. 20-21, the AUWCL Moot Court Honor Society hosted its annual Wechsler First Amendment Moot Court Competition. The high-profile competition attracted participants from 28 law schools from across the country, who competed in two rounds on Friday before eliminations began in the evening round, and continued in quarter-, semi-, and finals on Saturday.
