3L Megan Cox Named 2022 Gallogly Public Interest Fellow

January 20, 2022

American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) is proud to announce the selection of 3L student Megan Cox as fellow for this year’s Gallogly Family Foundation Public Interest Fellowship Program.

Jim Gallogly and his family started the Gallogly Family Foundation in 2011. Gallogly’s daughter, Kasey DeLuke, is the foundation’s executive director and a 2009 graduate of AUWCL. The foundation’s giving is focused on educational opportunities and land conservation. Modeled after the Skadden Public Interest Fellowship program, the Gallogly Foundation Fellows work for nonprofit organizations that provide direct legal services to low-income individuals and/or those deprived of their civil or human rights.

“Megan’s experience and support at AUWCL, including her Public Interest Public Service (PIPS) Scholarship, academic success, internships, and clinic were key to preparing her for this fellowship,” said DeLuke. “We’re thrilled to have Megan as a fellow and excited to support her important work at KIND.”

During the Gallogly Fellowship, Megan will partner with the Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) in Washington, D.C. to successfully fill a significant gap in legal services in the community.

CHAMPIONING HUMAN RIGHTS

Megan will serve as a 2022 Gallogly Family Foundation Fellow for her project with Kids in Need of Defense (KIND). At KIND, she will work with unaccompanied immigrant children who have mental or physical illnesses and disabilities, helping these clients gain access to quality medical care and legal services. She will also collaborate with other providers to lead community education initiatives on the intersection of disability and immigration.

“I am incredibly grateful to the Gallogly Family Foundation for selecting this project and to KIND for supporting my professional aspirations since my first summer internship,” said Megan. “Thank you to my family, friends, and mentors for their continual support, including those in the WCL community who work to expand opportunities for public interest students.”

Megan is pursuing a dual JD/MA degree at AU’s Washington College of Law and School of International Service. Her main areas of focus are international human rights, humanitarian law, refugee and asylum law, and child rights. Her passions have been shaped by her legal internships at Kids in Need of Defense, the Center for Justice and International Law, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and the Center for Justice and Accountability.
