PIJIP Appoints Diane Peters Senior Policy Fellow

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Diane Peters as a Senior Policy Fellow of the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP). Diane’s work with PIJIP will include developing and representing projects that promote tailoring intellectual property policies to promote access to innovation, research, education and health. Some of her immediate projects will include working with PIJIP Senior Policy Fellow Jorge Contreras to steward the Open COVID Pledge, which was incubated through PIJIP’s Patent Pledges Project. Diane will also assist the development of PIJIP’s project on the Right to Research in International Copyright, including serving as the liaison of the project to the World Health Organization.
Diane has extensive experience counseling public-minded organizations that focus on open policies and licensing practices. She joins PIJIP after 12 years as General Counsel at Creative Commons, Inc., where she directed the organization’s legal strategy and projects and helped shape and implement open policies in collaboration with intergovernmental organizations, governments and cultural memory institutions such as museums and libraries. She currently serves on the C-TAP steering committee for the World Health Organization as it shapes policies and practices for sharing of intellectual property in support of hastening solutions and cures to COVID-19. Diane is a founding director of the Software Freedom Law Center, served as general counsel for Open Source Development Labs (now, the Linux Foundation), and was legal counsel to Mozilla. In 2014, the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of California awarded her its Intellectual Property Vanguard Award for public policy. She is based in Portland, Oregon.
