Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property

In a pleading submitted just before the holidays to the Copyright Office in the Eighth Triennial Proceeding of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), student attorneys of the WCL Glushko-Samuelson Intellectual Property Law Clinic asked the Copyright Office to allow innovative online educators and instructors on online learning platforms for the same basic rights as educators in traditional classrooms – to use short clips of movies and TV shows in their educational and instructional learning. 

American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) has received a three-year grant of $3.8 million from Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, for its Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP). The project will study changes needed in international copyright policy to ensure equity in the production of and access to research.

Professor Farley to Speak at Katzen Arts Center About the Knoedler Art Gallery Fraud Case on December 8, 2020, 7:00- 8:00 pm. The event will bring together experts in art law, documentary film, and provenance research to discuss Driven to Abstraction (2020) and the important questions that it raises about the value of authenticity, race and criminal justice, and cultural authority.

Professor Sean Flynn chaired an event on A WTO Waiver for Intellectual Property for COVID? on November 19, 2020. The event was co-sponsored by the American Branch of the International Law Association, Committee on International Intellectual Property, PIJIP and the Texas A&M University Center for Law and Intellectual Property. The meeting surveyed the proposal by India and South Africa for a temporary waiver of certain TRIPS obligations on copyright, industrial designs, patents, and the protection of undisclosed information in relation to the “prevention, containment or treatment” of COVID-19.

On November 17th, Professor Jonas Anderson will be speaking at IAM Media event, IP 2020: The U.S. Patent System in a Year of Change. Professor Anderson will be a featured panelist for a discussion of litigation trends of the past year, specifically the rise of patent litigation in the Western District of Texas.

Professor Vicki Phillips, Director of the Glushko-Samuelson Intellectual Property Law Clinic, will participate in a panel discussion at the U.S. Copyright Office to celebrate the legacy of the Office’s Eighth Register and first woman Registrar, Barbara Ringer.
