In 2021 members of the Right to Research Civil Society Coalition hosted and spoke at conferences, submitted testimony and comments to governments, and appeared in the media.
Modern digital research technology, including text and data mining, is in increasing demand by those who seek to study the major problems of our day, including combatting health pandemics, monitoring hate speech and disinformation on social media, and creating machine learning and “artificial intelligence” technology. These and other essential research activities are not occurring everywhere, however, because copyright law does not permit their use everywhere. To promote equity, validity, collaboration and other values in production of and access to research products and material, there is a need for a degree of harmonization in research rights between countries.
The Civil Society Coalition on the Research in International Copyright Law works to establish global copyright norms to promote the production, access to and use of research materials.

The academic network, constructed through the membership of the Global Expert Network on Copyright User Rights, creates and disseminates research and analysis, and conduct stakeholder training, that supports the civil society network
