June 22, 2018

American University Washington College of Law hosted the Program on Comparative Judging, a unique two-day roundtable discussion. Judges from the United States, France, Italy, Japan and Brazil participated in the program and discussed a wide variety of issues facing Judges in virtually all legal systems around the world.

The discussion was chaired by Judge Peter J. Messitte, Senior U.S. District Judge for the District of Maryland and Adjunct Professor of Comparative Law at AUWCL. Other judges in attendance included Judge Marie-Laurence Navarri, Judicial Liaison at the Embassy of France in Washington; Judge Romina Incutti, Judicial Liaison at the Embassy of Italy in Washington; Judge Yusuke Hirose of the District Court in Tokyo, Japan; and Judge Marcus Onodera of the First Instance Court in São Paulo, Brazil.

During the intense 2-day seminar, Judges discussed such topics as the structure of judicial systems in common and civil law countries, judicial independence, legal education and judicial training. Judges exchanged their perspectives on judicial governance and administration, as well as adjudication strategies in civil and criminal procedures. The seminar concluded with a conversation about the promotion of international cooperation among Judges from participating countries.
