Professor Claudia Martin Submits Amicus Brief before the Supreme Court of Peru in the Appeal to Review the Pardon Granted to Alberto Fujimori

 

Professor Claudia Martin, Co-Director of Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, with the cooperation of American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) students Santiago Martínez Neira (LL.M.), and Zuleika Rivera (JD), submitted an amicus brief before the Supreme Court of Peru in the appeal to review the pardon granted to Alberto Fujimori by former President Pedro Kuczynski. AUWCL Professors Macarena Sáez, Director of the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law; Juan Méndez, Director of the Anti-Torture Initiative; and Susana SáCouto, Director of the War Crimes Research Office, also signed the amicus. Additionally, Angelita Baeyens, Program Director of Advocacy & Litigation, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and Rafael Barrios Mendivil, member of the Colectivo de Abogados José Alvear Restrepo (CCAJAR) joined this amicus brief. The amicus requests the Supreme Court of Peru to review, through the conventionality control, the legality of the pardon in light of the international obligations binding upon Peru under the American Convention on Human Rights. The Supreme Court of Peru will hold a public hearing on this matter on December 17, 2018.
