
The Center hosted a thought-provoking panel discussion titled “The impact of neurotechnologies on human rights - why neurodata might be the new epicenter of data protection” on October 10, 2024. The event brought together esteemed experts to examine the intersection of emerging neurotechnologies and human rights. Panelists included Laila Abdela, Privacy and Data Policy Manager at the Centre for Information Policy Leadership (CIPL); Nathan White, Leader of the Augmented Reality Policy Team at Meta Reality Labs; Veronica Arroyo, a researcher on biometric technologies at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab; and Diego Borbon, Director of the Research Group in Biological Sciences and Law at the Universidad Externado de Colombia, as well as a Professor of Medical Law, Neurolaw, and Artificial Intelligence.
The discussion delved into the implications of neurodata's rising significance in data protection and the broader ethical and legal challenges it presents. Panelists shared insights on topics such as the regulation of neurotechnologies, the potential for misuse of neurodata, and the importance of safeguarding human rights in the face of rapid technological advancements. Students had the unique opportunity to engage with these experts, deepening their understanding of how neurotechnologies intersect with privacy, data protection, and broader human rights concerns. This panel highlighted the Center's commitment to exploring cutting-edge issues at the forefront of human rights and technology.
